Grand Theft Auto (1997, PC/PS1), Grand Theft Auto 2 (1999), Grand Theft Auto III (2001), Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002), Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004), GTA Advance (2004, GBA), GTA Liberty City Stories (2005), GTA Vice City Stories (2006), Grand Theft Auto IV (2008), GTA Episodes from Liberty City (2009), GTA Chinatown Wars (2009), Grand Theft Auto V (2013), GTA Online (2013–present), Grand Theft Auto VI (2025).
The 3D Universe (GTA III Era)
GTA III (2001) revolutionised gaming with its third-person 3D open world. Vice City (2002) added 1980s Miami glamour. San Andreas (2004) expanded to a state-wide map with RPG mechanics. Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories were PSP/PS2 spin-offs. GTA IV (2008) rebooted the universe with a darker, realistic tone.
The HD Universe (Modern Era)
GTA IV began the HD Universe — a new fictional continuity distinct from the 3D games. GTA V (2013) expanded to three protagonists and one of the greatest open worlds ever made. GTA Online has been running continuously since 2013. GTA 6 (2025) continues this HD Universe in Leonida.
In-Universe Chronological Order
Within the HD Universe: GTA IV (2008 setting) → GTA Episodes from Liberty City → GTA V (2013) → GTA Online (2013–present) → GTA 6 (present day). The 3D Universe has its own chronology: Vice City Stories (1984) → Vice City (1986) → San Andreas (1992) → GTA III (2001) → Liberty City Stories (1998, parallel).
What Comes Next
After GTA 6, Rockstar will likely operate GTA 6 Online for a decade before GTA 7 enters serious development. Based on the series' recent cadence, GTA 7 — if it follows — would not arrive until the mid-2030s at the earliest.
