Michael De Santa

Michael is GTA 5's anchor — a former bank robber living in Witness Protection in Rockford Hills with his dysfunctional family. Bored, depressed, and secretly miserable despite material comfort, he is pulled back into crime through a fateful encounter with Franklin. Michael's special ability is bullet time — slowing time in combat, reflecting his precise, professional background. His story explores mid-life crisis, family dysfunction, and the impossibility of escaping your past.

Trevor Philips

Trevor is GTA 5's wild card — a former military pilot turned methamphetamine manufacturer operating from the desolate Sandy Shores. Violent, unpredictable, and boundlessly energetic, Trevor embodies the GTA fantasy in its most unconstrained form. His rage mode special ability absorbs damage while dealing amplified damage. His story explores abandonment, loyalty betrayed, and what happens when a person has no inhibitions whatsoever.

Franklin Clinton

Franklin is the youngest protagonist — an ambitious, street-smart young man from Strawberry who wants to escape the gang lifestyle and build something real. His connection to Michael provides the opportunity he has been seeking. Franklin's special ability slows driving time — reflecting his exceptional vehicular skill. His story is about mentorship, ambition, and navigating between two worlds simultaneously.

Character Relationships

Michael and Trevor share a complicated past involving a bank job, an apparent death, and a decade of bitterness. Their eventual reunion is charged with unresolved tension. Franklin serves as the catalyst who forces their relationship to a conclusion — and ultimately chooses its resolution.

The Three Endings

End A: Franklin kills Trevor (Michael's ally choice — Michael survives, Trevor dies). End B: Franklin kills Michael (Trevor's ally choice — Trevor survives, Michael dies). End C (Deathwish/Canonical): Franklin rallies both to eliminate the FIB, Merryweather, and Devin Weston. All three survive. GTA Online continuity confirms End C as canonical.
