RAGE Engine Rebuilt

Rockstar's proprietary RAGE (Rockstar Advanced Game Engine) has been extensively rebuilt for GTA 6, specifically designed around PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S capabilities. The updated engine takes full advantage of hardware ray tracing acceleration, custom NVMe SSD streaming, and the RDNA 2 GPU architecture's specific strengths.

Ray Tracing in GTA 6

The official trailer showcases extensive ray-traced effects: accurate reflections in Vice City's rain-slicked streets, realistic light bouncing off vehicle surfaces, window reflections showing genuine environmental detail, and dynamic shadow casting from all light sources. These effects run in real time rather than using pre-baked approximations.

Character and NPC Rendering

Character fidelity in GTA 6 represents a generational step. Skin subsurface scattering creates realistic flesh tones under light; individual hair strand rendering replaces helmet-like hair textures; dynamic cloth physics makes clothing move naturally; and facial micro-animations convey emotional states beyond simple happy/sad expression states.

Environmental Detail

The environment reacts dynamically to conditions: rain accumulates in real depressions rather than appearing as a texture overlay, individual palm frond movement responds to wind direction and speed, wet surfaces reflect accurate environmental imagery, and volumetric atmospheric lighting creates cinematic quality during golden hour and twilight transitions.

Performance Modes

PS5 and Xbox Series X are expected to offer two display modes: a Performance Mode targeting 60fps at 4K resolution (potentially with dynamic resolution scaling), and a Quality Mode targeting 30fps at 4K with full ray tracing enabled. A 60fps ray tracing mode may also be feasible on the most capable current-gen hardware.
