The Leak That Shook Gaming

On 18 September 2022, approximately 90 videos totalling around 3 GB of Grand Theft Auto VI development footage were posted to GTAForums by a user called 'teapotuberhacker'. The footage showed pre-alpha gameplay, placeholder assets, and internal dev builds — providing an unprecedented look at an unreleased Rockstar title.

What the Footage Showed

The leaked material confirmed: Vice City as the primary setting, dual protagonists Lucia and Jason, Florida Everglades environments, improved shop-entering mechanics, a dramatically enhanced NPC interaction system, and early versions of the wanted system, swimming mechanics, and vehicle handling. Much of it closely matched the final December 2023 official trailer.

Rockstar's Response

Rockstar confirmed the leak's authenticity in an official statement, calling it "extremely disappointing". The company stated development timelines would not be significantly affected. Law enforcement became involved, and the alleged perpetrator — a teenager from the UK — was subsequently arrested and later convicted in connection with both the Rockstar hack and a separate Uber breach.

What the Leak Got Right

Comparing the 2022 leaked footage to the December 2023 official trailer, the accuracy is striking. Lucia's design, the Leonida setting, Vice City's beachfront skyline, and the dual-protagonist structure all appeared in near-final form in the official reveal — confirming the leak was genuine and from a relatively advanced build.

Long-term Impact

The leak forced Rockstar to partially accelerate its communications strategy and likely contributed to the earlier-than-planned trailer release in December 2023. It also sparked significant discussion about game studio security and the psychological impact on development teams when years of work is exposed prematurely.
